Culturally Sensitive Mental Health Assessment of Young Children: Learning to Screen for Adjustment Problems

Problem behaviors and concerns about the mental health of children represent one of the most serious and difficult challenges facing early childhood programs. Dr. Oscar Barbarin of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, University of North Carolina, has developed a simple method early childhood programs can use at the pre-k level to screen problems of self-regulation of attention, behavior, language, and emotions (ABLE). Through its unique approach, ABLE offers in culturally sensitive ways, both a way to identify problems as well as a way to plan for preventive mental health intervention. This session provides training in the use of the ABLE and a discussion of alternative approaches to developing culturally sensitive programs of early detection and intervention for developmental concerns in early childhood. For more information about ABLE, visit www.abletest.com
