Policy and Advocacy
We must lift our voices in support of Black children, families and communities. BCDI-Chicago offers opportunities for Affiliate members to actively engage in our policy efforts by serving on our Public Policy and Advocacy Committee.
We provide advocacy training and opportunities to engage in lively discussions and share thoughts on current policies, practices, and systems at the local, state, and national level. As we engage in these conversations, we ask ourselves:
- Who are the people sitting at the tables as representatives and decision makers for African American children?
- Are the decisions made in the best interests of African American families?
- Who benefits from the outcomes of these decisions?
Public Policy and Advocacy Training Initiative:
On January 12, 2017, BCDI - Chicago kicked off its three-session Public Policy and Advocacy Training Initiative, ending on March 23, 2017. Conducted by Ireta Gasner of the Ounce of Prevention, this training was offered to Affiliate members to increase their knowledge and engagement in public policy and advocacy in preparation for BCDI-Chicago's future policy work. BCDI-Chicago is currently preparing to meet with the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus. At that time, our Affiliate plans to share information regarding our concerns as they align with the National Black Child Development Institute’s Action Agenda. We have identified a few good men and women who are a part of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus who can help us move this agenda forward.
