Who We Are
Established in 1982, Black Child Development Institute-Chicago (BCDI-Chicago) is an Affiliate of the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) committed to improving and advancing the quality of life for Black children, families, and communities in the Chicago metropolitan area. We are specifically focused on early care and education and support the development of a high-quality, accessible, affordable, and aligned system of early learning for children birth through age eight. Each of these years is critical to the social-emotional and educational success of students, particularly students of color, because they provide the foundation for all subsequent learning and development.
BCDI-Chicago is committed to supporting our Affiliate members by hosting professional development conferences and offering leadership training, mentoring, and networking opportunities. We pride ourselves on serving as a vital resource to parents, caregivers, teachers, social workers, and other early care and education professionals as they work with and on behalf of our children and families. As zealous advocates, we are dedicated to supporting and providing programs and services designed to improve and advance the quality of life for Black children, families, and communities in the Chicago metropolitan area.
BCDI-Chicago aligns its mission with the National Black Child Development Institute's “to improve and advance the quality of life for Black children and their families through education and advocacy.”
BCDI-Chicago's vision is “a society that embraces the commitment to a successful future for every child.” We believe that all Black children deserve high-quality, accessible, and affordable education, healthcare, housing, and supportive families and communities.
We understand the unique position of Black children in our society and celebrate the considerable strengths, assets, and resilience demonstrated by our children to ensure they live up to their full potential as successful and productive members of their communities.
“You are either part of the solution or part of the problem.”
We invite you to join us on our Affiliate's journey of hope, love, bright promises, and faith!
