BCDI-Dallas/Fort Worth Metro Hosts "Healthy Families, Healthy Children" Event
In honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, BCDI-Dallas/Fort Worth Metro hosted a "Healthy Families, Healthy Children" event on Saturday, April 22, 2017 to address the issues of child abuse, health and safety, and literacy for families in their local communities. Part of NBCDI's National Affiliate Network, BCDI-Dallas/Fort Worth Metro is deeply committed to building and cultivating our communities’ inherent strengths, assets, and cultures while improving the healthy and safety of our families. In keeping with our commitment, our Affiliate hosted an event to provide vital information and resources on these topics to families in our local communities.
Throughout the breakfast event, we discussed best practices on healthy living, including healthy nutrition and fitness, and safety tools and tips to prevent abuse and neglect among families.
During the event, BCDI-Dallas/Fort Worth Metro also encouraged parents and children to read Scholastic's bilingual nutrition-themed children's book entitled, "At the Farmers Market." In 2016, the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI), Too Small to Fail, Gerber, Scholastic, and other partners committed to distribute 100,000 copies of Scholastic's "At the Farmers Market" and supplemental tip sheet to children and families nationwide. These books include customized messages on the back cover to help families engage in language-rich interactions about food. Many of the books were distributed through NBCDI's National Affiliate Network, including BCDI-Dallas/Fort Worth Metro.
We would like to thank our community partners, MAXX Family Services, HEROES, and Macedonia Ministries, for all of their support throughout the event.
