The first eight years of a child’s life shape brain development, identity,
health, and long-term outcomes. NBCDI’s Eight Essential Outcomes
define what Black children deserve—not just to survive, but to flourish
—by addressing the systems that shape their earliest experiences.

WHY THE FIRST EIGHT YEARS matter

From birth to age eight, children experience rapid brain development that lays the foundation for learning, emotional well-being, physical health, and self-identity. For Black children, these early years are often shaped by inequitable systems rather than intentional care. The Eight Essential Outcomes provide a framework for reimagining those systems so Black children are nurtured, protected, and affirmed from the very beginning.
