National Black Child Development Institute Announces New Additions to Board of Directors


Community advocates join the Board of Directors of premier national organization dedicated to improving lives of Black children and families.

SILVER SPRING, M.D.— The National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sheila Whiteman and David Haiman to its Board of Directors. Dr. Whiteman’s commitment to health equity for women and Haiman’s robust understanding of community organizing and racial and economic justice will help NBCDI fulfill its mission to improve the quality of life for Black children and families.

“I am delighted to welcome David and Dr. Whiteman to our Board of Directors,” said Dr. Leah Austin, president and CEO of NBCDI. “Their combined years of proven experience and insight will certainly help us bolster our efforts in fighting against systemic racial inequities.”

Dr. Whiteman CLT, is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Certified Health Coach. As the owner of SCW Healthcare Enterprises, Dr. Whiteman has provided health and wellness services for more than 20 years through various fitness classes. Prior to NBCDI, Dr. Whiteman served as the Education Committee Chair of the National Council of Negro Women, Mitchellville/Bowie Section for seven years. Dr. Whiteman is also a best-selling author and speaker.

Haiman is a principal and the co-founder of Movement Matters, an organization dedicated to developing strong infrastructure that empowers communities through training and mentorship on community organizing, educational resources and transformational justice. Haiman brings more than 25 years of experience to the board; he has worked with grassroots organizations such as Detroit Action, ROC-DC and Young People for Progress to build member engagement structures focusing on movement-centered organizing cultures.
